Does Your Child Need Braces?
If you are thinking about getting braces for your child, you should be commended. Having a straighter smile not only makes oral hygiene easier but it also means a boost in confidence. A straight smile can be attained at any age, however the younger we are the easier it is to align teeth. Why? When we are young, our jaw is still growing and therefore it is more malleable for braces. Therefore, The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends having a child examined by an Orthodontist around the age of 7.
What’s involved when a child gets braces?
The orthodontist conducts an initial visual inspection of the child’s teeth. This will be accompanied by panoramic x-rays, study models (bite impressions) and computer generated images of the head and neck. These preliminary assessments are sometimes known as the “planning phase” because they aid the orthodontist in making a diagnosis and planning the most effective treatment.
In many cases, the orthodontist will recommend “fixed” orthodontic braces for a child. Fixed braces cannot be lost, forgotten or removed at will, which means that treatment is completed more quickly. Removable appliances may also be utilized, which are less intrusive, and are generally used to treat various types of defects.
Fixed Braces
The little “squares” you see on each individual tooth are called brackets and can be made of metal, ceramic, or a clear synthetic material. The wire that connects each bracket is called an archwire. Regular appointments to have the braces adjusted by the orthodontist will be scheduled once the braces are applied. Orthodontic elastic bands are often added to the braces to aid in the movement of specific teeth.
Retainers
After braces are removed, the teeth need to remain uniform and straight. To achieve this, a retainer is used which prevents the teeth from moving back to their original misalignment.
