Why They are Called Wisdom Teeth
Have your wisdom teeth recently come in? Or maybe you are a parent with a teenager saying their wisdom teeth are hurting. Why are these teeth often removed? Learn the answer to this as well as why they have the name "wisdom teeth".
We have bad news: these teeth do not add to your wisdom! If they did, we would surely keep these teeth for as long as possible! The truth of this name however comes from the simple fact that age comes with wisdom. Mouthhealthy.com states these teeth often erupt "between ages 17 to 21" which is a time in our life when we are nearing maturity. The term "third molars" is another common name for these teeth.
What is Their Purpose?
Third molars can be very useful when properly erupted. They exist for the same purpose of our other molars which is to grind food. The flat surface of these teeth are perfect for this function while other teeth are used to tear the food we eat. Interestingly however, some people's third molars never erupt or even form!
Why Are They Often Removed?
More often than not, third molars are extracted. Why is this the case? For one thing, they can cause discomfort when they come in if there is limited space in the mouth. This can then cause your other teeth to become crooked as the wisdom teeth press them forward. Decay can also result because of how far back in the mouth they are located, thus making cleaning difficult.
