Prevent Cavities with Dental Sealants
Walking away from the dentist with a cavity free smile is what we all hope for before each visit. What is an easy way to prevent tooth decay? You can easily prevent cavities with dental sealants.
What is a Sealant?
According to WebMD, “A Dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth (usually the back teeth) – to prevent tooth decay.” Just like a clear nail polish protects nails, sealants cover a tooth's surface to prevent the bacteria from getting into deep pits and fissures.
The Application
The application of dental sealants is a very fast and painless process.
- Etchant is an acidic material applied to the surface of the tooth that will be worked on. This prepares to tooth by roughening it to help the sealant material bond.
- Once the Etchant is washed away, the tooth will be thoroughly dried and cotton may be placed around the tooth to keep it dry.
- The sealant is then added into the occlusal grooves of the teeth.
- Finally a special curing light is used to set and harden the material.
Should I Get Them?
Sealants are a great idea for kids and adults. Kids can have this applied as soon as their first molars erupt. If you would like to learn more, please ask us about it. Schedule your next visit at Escondido Dental Group!
