Canker Sores VS Cold Sores
Canker sores and cold sores- don't get the two confused. They are similar in look and are both uncomfortable which can make them easy to mix up. However, cold sores are outside the mouth on the lips while canker sores are inside the mouth on such surfaces as the tongue and cheeks. Cold sores are very contagious, being caused by the herpes virus, while canker sores are not contagious.
How Do You Get Canker Sores?
The cause of canker sores varies greatly. According to Dentalcare.com, “...hereditary factors, stress or tissue injury are the likely causes...Acidic or citrus foods can also trigger a canker sore, as can sharp teeth, braces or ill-fitting dentures. Cigarette smoking and allergies may also increase the likelihood of canker sores.” Also, these oral sores can sometimes be a sign of underlying health issues.
If You Currently Have a Canker Sore
One to two weeks- that's how long these oral ulcers tend to last. So do not give up hope- they should be gone soon! In the meantime, baby the area, especially while eating so as to not accidentally bite down on the area. Spicy and acidic foods and drinks can further aggravate the area. Therefore, go easy on these items! For severe cases, you can always consult your dentist who can usually prescribe ointments or oral rinses.
